Lisa Kewley

Lisa_painting2Mariposa (Spanish for: Butterfly), was inspired by the artist’s travels in Europe.  In this body of work, colour and vibrancy is built up in layers using acrylic and gouache (a method of painting using opaque pigments ground in water and thickened with a glue-like substance) on canvas, bringing out undertones in old stonework, woodwork and masonry.

Mariposa is fresh and vivid, representing her zest to find new creativity and balance in life.
As a child Lisa enjoyed both art and science, inspired by photos of galaxies taken with the Hubble Space Telescope lead her to her current career choice. For the past twenty years, she has focused on establishing a successful career in astronomy.  Living overseas for ten years, she recently returned to Canberra as an astronomer at Mount Stromlo Observatory.  Lisa is a fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and she recently won an Australian Research Council Laureate Fellowship.

In 2015, Lisa began seriously exploring the creative arts, which unleashed a great passion for painting.  Her approach to her work is intuitive.  She is a synaesthete, (a neurological phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway), which enables her to internally visualize colours and patterns from her senses such as hearing and smell.

Her inspiration comes from a diverse range of visual art. She is influenced by impressionism, naive style, and the romantics. Lisa sees her artwork as an ongoing journey. She is currently establishing her own studio where she plans to explore large-scale artwork, as well as a children’s book which combines her illustration skills with her astronomy background.

Lisa is currently exhibiting till 22nd March at 39Steps Cafe, at O’Connor Shops. Visit the Cafe during Opening Hours, enjoy a Coffee and check out Lisa’s amazing Art. All Art is for Sale, contact Renate on 0424 032 303 or email
